Smugglers Den is a game about bluffing and bribery for 3 or 4 players. The goal is to make as much gold as possible by selling legal or contraband goods at the port.
During each turn, 1 player assumes the role of the Captain who inspects the goods of the other players.
It's the Captain's job to catch any contrabands from being smuggled in, while the other players must try to argue or bribe the Captain to pass inspection!
Gameplay Phases
The game is divided into 3 main phases: 1. Declaration, 2. Inspection and 3. Chest Reveal.
1. Declaration
At the start, 1 player is randomly picked as the Captain, while the others become the pirates.
The pirate players are given 8 random cards, ranging from legal or contraband goods (see Cards below).
They must then select from up to 5 cards to declare as one of the 4 legal goods: Fish, Coconuts, Tomatoes or Cheese:
A player can choose to honestly declare 100% legal goods, or try to smuggle in the more lucrative contraband goods.
After selecting their goods, players can choose to include a nice donation (aka bribe) to the Captain to tempt him to pass the inspection.
Once all the players' goods have been confirmed, the game moves to the Inspection phase.
2. Inspection
It's now the Captain's turn! The Captain can choose to either Accept or Inspect any player's chest:
If the Captain believes a pirate, he can choose to Accept and let the pirate through.
If the Captain thinks the pirate is lying, he can choose to stop and Inspect!
The inspected player can now choose to argue and convince the Captain, or he can choose to bribe with some gold:
If the Captain Accepts, the chest finally passes the inspection. (phew!)
If the Captain still chose Inspect, he will now open the chest (uh-oh!)
3. Chest Reveal
During this dramatic phase, the pirate's chest will now be opened for everyone to see:
Any legal goods that was declared honestly can now be sold by the pirate player for gold.
If the pirate was caught smuggling by the Captain, he will have to pay a fine for each smuggled good to the Captain.
Important note: A "smuggled" good can be a contraband or a legal, as long as they're not the exact goods that were declared!
For example, a player chose 2 Cheese and 1 Tomato, but decided to declared 3 Cheese. The Captain inspected the chest and fined the player for the 1 Tomato, because it was illegally declared as a Cheese.
If the Captain opened a chest and it turned out to be a wrong inspection (the pirate player actually declared all 100% legal goods), it's the Captain that needs to pay the pirate player a fee for each legal good!
Once all players have finished these 3 Phases, the next round begins and another player is picked as the Captain.
At the start of each new round, the pirate players are given more cards to refill their cards up to 8 cards total.
Cards
There are a total of 120 legal goods cards and 96 contraband cards in the game.
The cards divided into either legal (Green) cards:
Or the more contraband (Red) cards that can sell for a lot more:
The gold value in the bottom right corner in each card denotes the value of the good if it passes through the Captain's inspection:
The red value in the bottom left corner in a card refers to the penalty if a pirate is caught smuggling or if the Captain did a wrong inspection:
Since most contraband goods have much higher gold values, it's natural for any pirate to be tempted to smuggle some in.
End of Game
The game ends when all players have played as the Captain twice in the game (6 rounds for 3 players, 8 rounds for 4 players).
The gold amount for each player is kept hidden during the game, so as to not reveal who is ahead.
The player with the most gold at the end wins, and becomes the best smuggler in the Caribbean!
